I’ve graduated.  Now what?  How do I afford research? Come find out at our workshop titled Real World Research, this Tuesday, February 26th, from noon-1pm in Classroom 1337. Learn about the most important legal resources for research, including those that are free, which are essential for legal practice.  Discover an affordable alternative to Westlaw and Lexis – FastCase. FastCase provides access to a variety of legal resources including cases, statutes, and secondary sources.

Are you a first semester 1L interested in the basics of legal research?  Come to our Introduction to Legal Research workshop, this Thursday, February 28th, from noon-1pm in Classroom 1535, where you'll discover how to navigate Westlaw and Lexis in order to find reliable authority.

Can't make it this week? The Law Library will be offering workshops on many different topics throughout the semester. Take a look at our library workshops page to view a list of workshop descriptions and a link to the workshop calendar.

If you are going to be practicing law in Arizona, remember that the Arizona State Bar has bought access to Fastcase for its members. While not as fancy as Wexis or Lexlaw, it has most of the legal research basics.

Case Law Research Nuts & Bolts [Sep. 22 @ 12pm EST]

Searching for Statutes [Oct. 4 @ 3pm EST]

Fastcase Research Tips [Oct. 12 @ 3pm EST]

Here is their full webinar schedule for the rest of this year.

Lexis Pay-As-You-Go is No More!

by PSL Law Library 8. June 2011 16:40

For the solo practitioner that may not be able to afford the overhead of a LexisNexis database package, the credit card "pay-as-you-go" plan offered a panoply of paths to your legal preferences. Unfortunately, in the recent overhaul, Lexis decided to discontinue this feature.  When you go to the Lexis® Total Research System page and choose "sign in using a credit card" option, you are directed to the LexisNexis™ by Credit Card page that delivers a message that reads in part:

“LexisNexis no longer offers the website LexisNexis™ by Credit Card. This decision is part of our effort to create and support products that better meet those needs identified through collaboration with our customers. . .”

The message goes onto say that users could take advantage of lexisONE for free unenhanced state & federal case law and also directs users to LexisWeb®; which is their version of Google but with vetted sites.

This all comes as an unfortunate surprise.  On the bright side though, Westlaw® still offers a pay-as-you-go plan and hasn’t mentioned ending this option any time soon!
