If you are looking for a low-key way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day I have an idea for you.  Head over to the Law Library’s DVD collection and check out The Irish R.M. This series aired on PBS in the late 80’s and follows a retired British military man who becomes a Resident Magistrate in rural Ireland.  The series takes place in 1897 and aired 18 episodes over three seasons.  DVD’s of the first two seasons can be found in the Law Library.  The bonus to watching this series is that it was taped in County Kildare so while you won’t be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Ireland you can still enjoy views of the countryside.

We know everyone is on Spring Break... and perhaps that gives you some time to check out the Law Library's AMAZING legal DVD collection (located along the west wall behind the reference desk)! View a listing of the DVDs in our collection here. Read a previous blog post about our legal DVD collection here.

For students, DVDs circulate for 7 days with no renewals. Students may check out up to 5 DVDs at one time. Be sure to watch My Cousin Vinny, The Paper Chase, or any of the many legal TV shows we have in the collection, such as Law & Order (naturally)! We even have the Academy Award-nominated & winner of 3 Oscars (for film editing, music-original score, and writing- adapted screenplay), The Social Network!

Following this tangent, I bring you this week's Library Loot puzzle- a crossword all about Legal Cinema! Be sure to read the instructions carefully!

Law & Movies

The Academy Awards are less than a month away and I’ve started thinking about law & movies.  How many movies out there involve a criminal act, arrest or trial?  How many of those movies are nominated for an Academy Award and win?  Also, is the legal system depicted accurately in those movies?

As many of you already know the library has a comprehensive collection of movies and TV shows that deal with legal matters.  However, did you know that you can also find several books about the legal system and movies?  By conducting a simple keyword search using the catalog I was able to locate at least three books that may answer some of the questions above.  What terms did I use?  Well that was easy “law and movies”.  I then opened one of the results and looked at subjects contained in the record.  By selecting these subjects I may be able to locate even more books dealing with my subject matter.  This technique can be used when conducting research for any subject.  Now it’s time to jot down the call number, grab the book and see if I can answer those questions.
